Stepping Stones to Faith
| Stepping Stones to Faith Program is our way to celebrate
each child, bless each family and call parents back to the promises given at
their child’s baptism. As your children grow, each of the promises are
fulfilled at different stages (steps) in their faith life. Through our
Stepping Stones to Faith Program we celebrate these promises with you and
your children.
Stepping Stone One – Baptism
At this time parents make the promises to bring their children faithfully to
the services of God’s house, to teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the creed and
the Ten Commandments, to place in their hands the Holy Scriptures and to
provide for their instruction in the Christian faith.
Stepping Stone Two - Entry into Sunday School
This may occur between the ages of two and four. We recognize that all
children are individuals and each will be ready for Sunday School within
their own time. Once your child is ready to attend we will bring them
forward to recognize and bless each one.
Stepping Stone Three - First Bible
Once in Third Grade, children receive their first Bible from the
congregation. This fulfils the promises to "place in their hands the Holy
Scriptures." Prior to the receipt of their Bible, each child, with their
parents are requested to attend two "Using the Bible" sessions where we take
"a walk" through the Bible together. We discover where our favorite verses
are and some important facts about the Bible.
Stepping Stone Four - First Communion
Once in Fifth Grade, children attend six weeks of classes to prepare to
receive their First Communion. At that time, the children and their
families come to the altar for a blessing as parents restate their baptismal
promises.
Stepping Stone Five - Entering Confirmation
Confirmation is a two year commitment for the children and their parents to
continue their growth in relationship to God and God’s people through
classes and service.
Stepping Stone Six – Confirmation
We celebrate the completion of our confirmation program in worship. This
serves to remind students, parents and all adults in the congregation that
learning is lifelong and does not stop after two years of study and small
groups.
Stepping Stone Seven - Graduation from High School (and College)
We have made it a point to celebrate the completion of these milestones with
a time of sharing of plans, a small gift and the joy we share together with
these students as we have watched them mature from baptism through entering
the world on their own. We rejoice with them and hope that the faith we have
shared together may have strengthened each of us. |
